Vatican-ness

Yesterday I went to the Vaticano. It was really cool to see all that old, religious stuff and the roman statues. The a lot ceilings of the museo were so richly painted that I could not get over the amount of time and concentration and skill that it must have taken to accomplish that. Of course I went into the Cappella Sistina and saw the Creation of Adam by Michelangelo (I even snuck a few pictures cause apparently you can't take any, but alas father I have sinned.) The Chappel was past the part of the museum that had a ton of cool paintings of, I dunno, religious stuff and church stuff. Sorry if I'm offending any art of history folks, but I just thought they were really awesome to look at and think about the craftsman ship and the age more than anything else.

I was supposed to be there with a bunch of the guys, but somewhere between the Roman statues and the Sistine Chappel, we got separated. I tried waiting for them at the end of the museum, but I fell asleep on a bench for, I dunno, probably half an hour (I'm surprised that the guards didn't kick my ass or nobody stole my crap.) When I woke up I just thought to myself, "well I guess I'll try to find my way back..."

I left the Vatican and just wandered around the touristy ristorantes and gelato shops and high end shops until I looked over and saw a bunch of trees in a spot that look kinda park-ish and decided, hey why not go over there. I'm lost already anyway. I walked over there and it turns out that I was right next to Castel Sant Angelo, which I've been using as a landmark to find my way back to the apartment. I noticed that there was a street fair going on on a pathway that ran along on of the walls next to the Tiber so of course I went to check it out. Aside from all the touristy t-shirts and other junk I found a stand that sold stuff preserved in olive oil. I ended up getting a jar of preserved artichoke hearts and was pretty happy. What made that day even better was finding a stand that sold romano cheeses and cured meats, so I ended up walking away that day with jarred artichoke hearts and some spicy dried out old meat of some unknown composition, which made me very happy.

It was definitely a good day to get lost.
